Therapy for Depression, Grief, and Life Transitions in New York
For when life feels heavy, disconnected, or unclear.
Certain seasons of life can make you feel distant from yourself, as if you are moving through the world under a gray cloud that follows you everywhere. You might feel unlike your usual self, struggling to find joy in the things you once loved or finding it nearly impossible to summon motivation for daily tasks. At Vida Sana, we specialize in supporting individuals who have felt misunderstood or overlooked by traditional mental health approaches. We help you make sense of what you are carrying so you can reconnect with yourself and move toward a life that feels grounded and whole.
Understanding the Weight of the Journey
Navigating Depression, Loss, and Change
While these experiences often overlap, they each impact your mind and body in unique ways. We help you identify the roots of your distress to ensure your treatment feels relevant and supportive.
Depression
Depression is a mental health condition that affects the way a person feels, thinks, and functions. It involves persistent sadness, loss of interest or pleasure, and changes in sleep, appetite, energy, or concentration. For some, depression follows a major loss or life change; for others, it lingers quietly without an obvious cause.
Depression can happen for many reasons. Sometimes it runs in families, sometimes it’s connected to stress or painful experiences, and sometimes it shows up without a clear reason at all. While it can feel isolating, depression is common and treatable with therapy, support, and, in some cases, medication.
Grief
Grief is a natural response to loss. It’s the emotional and physical experience that comes when someone or something deeply meaningful to us changes or is gone. While grief is often connected to the death of a loved one, it can also follow the loss of a relationship, a job, our health, our identity, the “what if” we hoped for, or the future we thought we were going to have.
For some, grief feels sharp and overwhelming; for others, it’s quiet and lingering. It can affect mood, sleep, appetite, and concentration, and may come in waves—sometimes feeling manageable, and other times hitting without warning.
We understand that not all grief is something we move on from. Some losses stay with us, becoming part of who we are. Our work is about learning to walk alongside that grief in a way that feels manageable—honoring what was while still creating space for what is.
Life Transitions
Life transitions are the moments that reshape who we are and how we see ourselves. They can be planned or unexpected—like starting a new job, moving to a new city, ending or beginning a relationship, becoming a parent, or adjusting to a new stage of life. Even positive changes can bring stress, uncertainty, and a sense of loss for the version of ourselves or life we’re leaving behind.
These shifts can stir up mixed emotions—excitement, fear, sadness, or confusion—and can sometimes lead to feeling stuck, disconnected, or unsure of what comes next. It’s common to question your direction or sense of identity during these times.
We help you make sense of these transitions and the emotions that come with them. Together, we can explore what’s changing, what’s staying with you, and how to move through this season of life with clarity, compassion, and balance.
How We Help with Trauma and C-PTSD
Reclaiming Your Narrative Through Change
At Vida Sana, we look at the whole person and the whole story. Our majority of work utilizes a dual-legged approach that addresses both your immediate needs and the deeper roots of your distress.
Solution-Focused Skills: We use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) to help you deal with immediate symptoms. These tools help you restructure negative thinking patterns and provide grounding skills to cope with daily distress.
Exploratory Depth: We draw from psychodynamic theory, liberation psychology, and relational work to understand what is happening beneath the surface. We explore how your past, your childhood, and internalized messages from the world around you impact your current well-being.
Tailored for You: You are welcome to focus on solutions, deep exploration, or a blend of both. We customize the work to what makes sense for your specific goals and history.
