OCD Therapy in NY
Are obsessions and compulsions making life feel harder to manage?
When thoughts won’t turn off, life gets small. OCD treatment help you face fears, cut rituals, and rebuild routines around what matters — sleep, focus, family, joy.
What is Obsessive- Compulsive Disorder?
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a mental health condition where unwanted, intrusive thoughts, images, or urges (obsessions) trigger anxiety or discomfort, and a person feels driven to do repetitive behaviors or mental actions (compulsions) to get relief. Relief is temporary, so the cycle repeats and can become time-consuming and exhausting.
Obsessions — unwanted thoughts, ideas, images, or impulses and urges that are experienced as repugnant, threatening, obscene, blasphemous, nonsensical
Compulsions — behaviors or acts that you feel driven to perform although you may recognize them as senseless or excessive.
OCD is more than being neat or particular.
It’s the amount of distress and the pull to perform rituals that set it apart from everyday worries. Left untreated, it can interfere with school, work, relationships, and rest.
The good news: OCD is highly treatable.
Evidence-based care – such as Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), metacognitive strategies, mindfulness skills, and when appropriate, medication – can help people reduce rituals, relate differently to intrusive thoughts, and live in alignment with their values. At Vida Sana, we pair these approaches with culturally responsive care that respects identity, community, and lived experience.
What clients often say when they’re struggling with OCD:
“My brain won’t shut up” — intrusive thoughts that feel constant, scary, or taboo
“Rituals are stealing my time” — compulsions or mental rituals that eat up hours (checking, washing, reassuring, reviewing)
“Avoidance shrinks my life” — skipping work, school, or social plans; perfectionism and procrastination
“I can’t trust my mind” — doubts about memories, decisions, identity, or morality (“What if I’m a bad person?”)
“I’m exhausted and ashamed” — stress, poor sleep, guilt, and fear of being judged or misunderstood
“Therapy didn’t help before” — prior talk therapy felt like reassurance loops instead of teachable skills
“It’s hurting my relationships” — frequent reassurance seeking, conflict about rituals, secrecy
“Work or school is slipping” — trouble focusing, missed deadlines, calling out sick
How We Treat OCD
At Vida Sana Psychology & Wellness, we use evidence-based OCD care — and we also know the research on OCD hasn’t always centered communities of color. We start by listening, co-create goals with you, and build a treatment plan that fits your culture, values, language, and life.
-
We map your OCD cycle (obsessions → anxiety → compulsions → short-term relief) and identify triggers, rituals, and safety behaviors.
Not sure if you have OCD? We’ll screen with validated tools, discuss your lived experience, and co-create an evidence-based plan — whether that’s ERP, ACT, or another approach that fits your goals.
-
Gradual, collaborative exposures while reducing rituals/compulsions. We go at your pace and make sure treatment feels safe and effective every step of the way.
-
Build skills to notice thoughts without getting hooked and move toward a values-aligned life.
-
Change how you relate to thoughts, urges, and uncertainty — not by arguing with them, but by responding differently.
-
Working with a psychiatrist / prescriber? Working with a therapist for more traditional “talk” therapy? We recognize the importance of everyone on your treatment team being on the same page and so, with your consent, we will reach out to consult with other members of your treatment team.
-
OCD doesn’t exist in a vacuum. When clinically appropriate, we consider culture, religion/spirituality, gender/sexuality, language, immigration/acculturation stressors, and systemic context.
Whether these factors impact your symptoms or not, you’ll get care that is respectful, culturally aware, and practical. We pair gold-standard OCD treatment with a plan tailored to your values, strengths, and context. -
We keep treatment steady, transparent, and choice-based to maintain safety while doing challenging work.
